Springtime NurseryText Box: These plants grow submerged under water, they help absorb the impurities and free the oxygen. These plants feed off the same nutrients as the algae so what they do is help starve the algae out.
This is helpful in preventing the growth of algae. Keep in mind these plants do not always solve the algae problems, they do help deter the algae, and if the problem is really bad when you get the oxygenating plants, it could take a long while for you to see results.
The fish love to spawn in the oxygenating plants and the small fry can hide in them.
Hornwort can just be weighed down with lead weights no need to plant it in soil or gravel. Hornwort can really, multiply quickly, the great thing is that you can just pull it out of the pond with no problem.
Anacharis should be planted, you can use gravel and a small pot. In most cases 3 or 4 plants will fit in one pot if you are using a 5-6 inch pot. After you have planted them you can drop them to the bottom of the pond. You can use soil to plant the anacharis as well as gravel, just leave an inch or so from the top of the pot and fill the rest of the way with sand.
These plants should never be planted in the same pot with the lilies. Oxygenating plants are usually warm water plants and most times they do not winter over, you could try to winter them in an aquarium, some of our customer’s use this method.
As I mentioned most of the oxygenating plants multiply rapidly when conditions are just right for them, in some states a few of the varieties are considered noxious weeds and are not allowed into the state. We do our best to be sure that what we are sending is allowed to be sent to the state where our customers live, however, it is the customers responsibility.
